Kambalapalli verdict: State's appeals allowed

HIGH COURTROUND-UP Division Bench calls for records; 32 persons were acquitted

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday admitted two appeals by the State Government against the acquittal by a lower court of 32 persons allegedly involved in the Kambalpalli massacre in which seven Dalits were burnt alive.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice N. Ananda heard the State Public Prosecutor and called for records from the lower court.

The prosecution said the State's appeal was directed against the December 4, 2006 order of the Second Additional Sessions Judge, Kolar, in acquitting 32 persons of burning to death seven villagers of Kambalpalli in Chintamani taluk of Kolar district. He said the appeal was for a retrial in the case because several witnesses had turned hostile. According to the prosecution, seven Dalits who were burnt to death at Kambalapalli in March 2000. This incident was believed to be a reprisal for the murder of Krishnappa Reddy, a village functionary. The Bench adjourned hearing on the matter.
