CUDDALORE: District Collector Rajendra Ratnoo has called upon the self-help groups to develop into a strong people's organisation. For this they should act independent of any agencies, he said. The Collector was addressing the gathering of the SHGs on the occasion of International Women's Day here on Tuesday. Mr. Ratnoo said it was time the SHGs set their own agenda without depending on the voluntary organisations. For this, they ought to take up capacity-building programmes on a sustainable manner. To enable them to do so, networkings of the SHGs had been formed as panchayat-level federations and block-level federations. These federations were being promoted with the objective of facilitating them to mobilise appropriate resources and support without any cost to the Government or to the society. Mr. Ratnoo said there were 16,740 SHGs in the district with a membership of 2,90,324 as follows: village panchayats - 13,967, town panchayats - 1,062 and municipalities - 1,711. The savings of these SHGs had exceeded Rs. 73 crore, and they had obtained loans of about Rs.71 crore. For the current fiscal, it had been targeted to form 1,917 SHGs, and till the first week of March, 1,787 SHGs had been set up. P. Ravikumar, Project Officer (Mahalir Thittam) and SHG members participated.
