PUDUCHERRY: In a symbolic protest, residents of Thengaithittu, who are up in arms against the Government on the modernisation of the port, took out a rally and burnt photocopies of their ration cards before courting arrest on Tuesday. The villagers took out a rally from Odiansalai station through Anna Salai. The police stopped them at the Raja Theatre junction. They courted arrest after burning the copies of their ration cards. Police said 1,500 protestors, including 498 women, were arrested and later released. Totally around 3,600 people including supporters of Puducherry Munnetra Congress (PMC) and Bharathiya Janata Party attended the rally. They shouted slogans against the Government and warned of a statewide agitation if the project was not withdrawn. The leader of the committee to prevent land acquisition in Thengaithittu, S. Kaliappan, said they would continue with the agitation until the Government issued a notification withdrawing the project. He wanted the administration to take back the 153 acres of land handed over to the private developer. The Government handed over the land even before the Union Ministry of Environment and Forestry had given sanction for the project, he added. PMC legislators K. Lakshminarayanan, N. Anandhu and V.K. Ganapathy also participated.
