U.S. researchers visit Erode

To study activities of municipality


  • Aware of water pollution and traffic congestion
  • They hope to complete work and submit study report by May

    ERODE: Twenty research students from the United States visited Erode municipality to conduct a study on the performance of local bodies, their work and development activities.

    All of them, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), U.S. came to the Erode municipal office on Monday, headed by an IAS officer Rajendrakumar to conduct the study.

    They will go into the planning processes of the municipality and take note of how the local body addresses various issues.

    On completion of their work, they hope to submit a study report by May to MIT and also to the State and Central Governments.

    He said that the team members were aware of issues such as water pollution and traffic congestion in the town.

    Municipal Chairman K. Kumar Murugesh said that the local body was providing alternate water supply to its residents.

    A master plan had been drawn up and proposals sent to the Government regarding a scheme to provide round-the-clock water to residents in the town.

    To tackle pollution caused by effluents from tanning and dyeing industries flowing into the Cauvery river, he said proposals had been made to transport the effluents through pipelines to the sea.

    Treatment plant

    Municipal Commissioner K.R. Selvaraj said a treatment plant would be constructed for treating sewage and other wastes.

    After treatment, the water would be used for irrigation.

    The Chairman of Federation of All Traders Association R.S. Nataraja Mudaliar, Secretary of the Federation S. Sivanesan, and representatives from `Pasumai Ulagam' spoke.

    The members of the team will visit the pumping station, municipal parks and bus stand, besides the electric crematorium.
