Jayalalithaa: land in A.P. not assigned

Special Correspondent

Time given to show original documents

HYDERABAD: A legal team representing AIADMK general secretary and the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, has argued that continuance of her ownership of Petbasheerabad lands near Hyderabad (8.10 acres) will not be in contravention of the AP Assigned Lands (Prohibition of Transfers) Act of 1977.

Ms. Jayalalithaa deputed a four-member team headed by N. Jyothi, senior advocate and AIADMK MP, to a hearing held by the Andhra Pradesh Government here on Monday following two notices served on her after identifying the land as "assigned."

At the hearing, which was conducted by P. Venkateswarlu, tehsildar, Qutubullahpur, the team argued that Ms. Jayalalithaa, indeed, had purchased the lands but the transaction took place during 1956-58. The purchases did not, therefore, attract the provisions of the AP Assigned Lands (Prohibition of Transfers) Act of 1977 as the legislation came 19 years later.

Also, any continuance of the ownership of the lands, which were purchased before the Act came into force in 1977, would not clash with the Act or its latest version with recent amendments made by the Government to recover all assigned lands for redistribution to the poor.

The team offered to show the original documents indicating the purchase of the lands in 1956-58 with Ms. Jayalalithaa as buyer. It sought two weeks to produce them before the State revenue authorities as they were seized by authorities in connection with the "disproportionate assets case" pending against her before a special court in Bangalore.

The tehsildar granted time and posted the final hearing in the case to April 9. Revenue officials said the case would be disposed of on that date finally based on whatever material available by then.
