Narang leaves for World Cup

HYDERABAD: Top gun Gagan Narang will take part in three World Cup shooting championships starting with Fort Benning, Atlanta from April 8.

He left on his 45-day trip on Tuesday night after a preparatory camp in New Delhi.

From Fort Benning, he will leave for Sydney, where the next competition commences on April 27.

The move is aimed at saving travelling time to India and escaping the heat of summer back home, when performances are likely to dip.

On May 3, he will be in Bangkok for the third event.

Quota places

Three shooters from each country vie for quota places for the Olympics at the World Cups, making the latter more competitive than the Olympics themselves and the Asian Games.

Narang incidentally was the first from the country to obtain the quota place for the Beijing 2008 Olympics, followed by Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Manavjit Singh Sandhu, Anjali Bhagwat and Avneet Kaur Sidhu, in that order.

The 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games quadruple gold medallist has already earned a quota place in the 10m air rifle event, but could win the same in the 50 metre three position rifle and 50m prone events too. — Special Correspondent
