UPHOLDING A CAUSE: Journalist Patil Puttappa addressing the eleventh `Samskruti Sammelana' at the Karnatak University in Dharwad on Tuesday.
DHARWAD: Veteran journalist Patil Puttappa has accused the Union Government of deliberate delay in according classical language status to Kannada language, which has a rich culture and history. He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the "Eleventh Samskruti Sammelana" organised by the Dr. R.C. Hiremath Chair of Kannada Studies at the Karnatak University here on Tuesday. Although evidence about the antiquity of Kannada language was available across the country, it was astonishing to note that the Union Government accorded classical status to Tamil, but delayed giving the same status to Kannada, he said. Mr. Papu regretted that although attacks on Kannada, State's land and water were on the rise, the writers of Kannada were not raising a united voice against it. S.K. Saidapur, Vice Chancellor of Karnatak University, inaugurated the "Samskruti Sammelana". As part of the "Suvarna Karnataka" celebrations, the university had decided to bring out a book titled "Suvarna Karnataka: Saadhanegalu", he said. B.R. Hiremath, head of the R.C. Hiremath Chair of Kannada Studies, presided over the function. A. Murigeppa welcomed the gathering.
