PROTEST: Women of Toravi Hakkala staging a demonstration in front of the Kamaripet Police Station in Hubli on Tuesday.

HUBLI: Tension prevailed for sometime in front of Kamaripet Police Station here on Tuesday after several Muslim women staged a demonstration outside the station demanding release of those arrested in connection with the stone-throwing incident at Toravi Hakkala on Sunday night.

    In judicial custody

It might be recalled that 40 persons were arrested and remanded in judicial custody in connection with stone-throwing and vandalism at Toravi Hakkala during a music programme organised as part of the consecration ceremony at a temple.

Scores of Muslim women gathered before the Kamaripet Police Station on Tuesday and demanded the release of the arrested.

    `Houses damaged'

They contended that many of those belonging to the Muslim community were hurt during the stone-pelting incident and their houses were also damaged. They alleged that only persons belonging to their community had been arrested. During the demonstration, a few women tried to barge into the station, which caused tension in the area. Meanwhile, rumours about stone-throwing and arson spread in the area creating panic among the public.

Deputy Commissioner D. Praksh (Law and Order) rushed to the spot and after interacting with the protesting women, received a counter complaint from them with regard to Sunday's incident. The police said the situation around Toravi Hakkala was under control.

Meanwhile some political leaders including former mayor Anilkumar Patil (Congress) and North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation chairman Ashok Katwe (BJP) visited Toravi Hakkala on Tuesday and interacted with the residents.
