Crocodile caught in Bagalkot village

Staff Correspondent

BIJAPUR: In a joint operation with villagers, Forest Department staff caught a 12-foot-long crocodile that had strayed into Katarki village on the bank of the Ghataprabha in Bilagi taluk of Bagalkot district on Monday.

Hanmanth Ramappa Nadkattina, a resident of the village, had a narrow escape from falling prey to the crocodile. It had reportedly crawled up very close to where he was sleeping on the open ground outside his farmhouse. However, his alert dog had woken him up by barking continuously. On switching on his torchlight, he was frightened to see the crocodile lying within a striking distance from him, and quickly ran to safety.

Deputy Conservator of Forests Girish Hosur told The Hindu that the crocodile was caught the next day at noon after hours of struggle, and later released into the Alamatti Reservoir. It was the second crocodile to stray into human habitation in the last one week.
