Graduates fail to secure 50 per cent first preference votes

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The claims of political parties over the `success' of their candidates notwithstanding, all the contestants for the graduates' constituencies of the Legislative Council failed to secure clear margin of 50 per cent first preferential votes.

Three CPI(M) candidates — K. Nageswar from Hyderabad-Ranga Reddy-Mahabubnagar constituency, V. Subramaniam (Chittoor-Nellore-Prakasam) and George Victor (East and West Godavari) — have been declared elected on the basis of the second preference vote they secured.

The voting pattern was no different in the Krishna-Guntur and the Anantapur-Kadapa-Kurnool constituencies where Chigurupati Varaprasad and M. Venkatasiva Reddy respectively, both supported by the TDP, were declared elected after counting of the second preference votes. TRS candidates — K. Dileep Kumar from Nalgonda-Warangal-Khammam and R. Satyanarayana (Medak-Karimnagar-Adilabad-Nizamabad) — as well as the CPI(M) backed M.V.S. Sarma from the Visakhapatnam-Vizianagaram-Srikakulam constit uency have already been declared elected in a similar fashion. While the Congress kept itself away from the graduates' and teachers' constituencies elections, the results came in as a big boost for the CPI(M) that will have a five-member representation in the Council. The TRS, with one candidate already elected, secured two more seats.
