TIRUPATI: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has decided to press for an all-party delegation led by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to voice the State's concern over the Babli project issue to the Centre. While all opposition parties are contemplating taking a delegation to New Delhi, the CPI feels that it would only be appropriate for the Chief Minister to lead the delegation. The party is of the view that the Government has to involve even public and social organisations in the delegation. At a media conference here on Tuesday, CPI State secretary K. Narayana explained that such a delegation would not only convey the gravity of the situation to the Centre, but also throw light on the fact that the State political leaders, cutting across party lines, were committed to the cause. He criticised Maharashtra for unilaterally going ahead with the project that could turn out to be "another Alamatti" for the State. Mr. Narayana expressed surprise at what he called the belligerent stand taken by Maharashtra that not only backtracked on the commitment given to the Supreme court, but was also deliberately crossing the line of propriety to harm the interests of the lower riparian neighbour. The results of Council polls sounded a warning bell to the State Government, he noted and asked the Congress to take it as an anti-establishment vote and learn lessons.
