`A mandate against money politics'

Staff Reporter

OU assistant professor Nageshwar elected to Council

HYDERABAD: Educated voters have given their decisive verdict that money alone will not bring political power and I will not disappoint them, said Independent candidate K. Nageshwar after he was declared elected to Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council here on Tuesday.

Dr. Nageshwar, an Associate Professor of Osmania University's Department of Communication and Journalism, won the graduates' constituency seat for Mahabubnagar, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad districts.

He polled 32,398 votes and defeated his nearest rival, Telugu Desam's P.L. Srinivas, by a margin of 467 votes with the latter polling 31,931 votes. Returning Officer Sanjay Jaju declared Dr. Nageshwar elected and handed over the certificate at his chambers on Tuesday afternoon. Later, talking to presspersons, Dr. Nageshwar thanked the Government and private sector employees as well as teachers' organisations for having supported him.

He felt he could make a difference to the quality of debate in the House of Elders in raising issues affecting the common people.

Dr. Nageshwar feels that being an Independent candidate is a definite advantage since he would not be "controlled by party diktats or leadership".
