Yuva Morcha activists disrupt budget presentation

Term the budget an ADB document; nine activists arrested

KOLLAM: Presentation of the Kollam Corporation's annual budget got held up for 15 minutes on Tuesday when a group of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) activists barged into the council hall shouting slogans terming the budget an Asian Development Bank (ADB) document.

The Kollam Corporation is implementing ADB-aided projects worth Rs.122.99 crore. There was prior information that the BJYM activists would organise a demonstration in front of the Corporation building. The Mayor himself had informed the police about it and sought police presence at the Corporation complex. But the BJYM activists misled the police and some of them rushed to the dais, disrupted the Mayor's address and squatted on the floor of the dais raising slogans against the budget. Shortly afterwards, the police reached the scene and removed the BJYM demonstrators. The police said nine BJYM activists were arrested and remanded in custody.

When the council meeting resumed, Leader of the Opposition George D. Kattil alleged that the BJYM activists disrupted the proceedings because of the inefficiency of the police. He wanted the council to adopt a resolution protesting against police inefficiency and then proceeded with the budget speech. And the Mayor obliged.
