KOLLAM: The annual budget of the Kollam Corporation for 2007-2008 shows a revenue of Rs.104,35,09,370, an expenditure of Rs.101,38,02,400 - a surplus of Rs. 2,97,06,970. The budget was presented on Tuesday by Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Finance Standing Committee Veliyam N. Rajan. The budget makes an appreciable provision for implementing various projects for the development of the city and improving the civic amenities. These include commencement of work on the Kadappakada and Polayathodu shopping complexes, bus terminal at Chinnakada, the Tangasseri bus stand, a bus stand and shopping complex at Eravipuram and improved public markets at Tangasseri, Ayathil and Kilikollur. Provisions have been made for mini stadiums at Kollam Port and Mangad, the development of Asramam, Thirumullavaram and Vattakayal as tourist attractions, and shifting of the lorry stand to Kochupilamoodu. For the construction of an indoor stadium, the Corporation will make an allocation of Rs.25 lakh. Rs.20 lakh has been allocated for giving face-lift to parks. For the timely maintenance of the Corporation roads, a permanent unit of workers will be constituted. An expert committee will also be constituted for the preparation of projects required for the development of the city. In association with the Railways, a foot overbridge will be constructed from a point in front of Craven High School to the railway station platform. The footpath from Chinnakada to Taluk Office Junction will be paved with tiles and beautified. Similarly, the footpath along the Chinnakada overbridge will also be improved. Cultural centres will be opened at Vadakevila and Elavanthi. For the development of the district hospital, an allocation of Rs.50 lakh has been made. A similar amount has been allocated for purchasing land required for the proposed Kendriya Vidyalaya. Gas crematoria will be set up at Polayathodu and Mulamkadakam. In addition to that, a mobile crematorium will also be made available in the city. An allocation of Rs.62 lakh has been made for purchase of vehicles required for augmenting the sanitation programme. Attempts will also be made to utilise the Vattakayal in the city as a source of water supply.
