Four records re-written

MELBOURNE: Four records were set on Tuesday at the World championships — three by Americans Michael Phelps, Natalie Coughlin and Aaron Peirsol, the other by Italian Federica Pellegrini.

Phelps set his World mark in the 200-metre freestyle, in a time of 1 minute, 43.86 seconds, to break Australian Ian Thorpe's previous record of 1:44.06 at Fukuoka, Japan in 2001.

In the next race, Coughlin broke her own World record in the 100m backstroke, finishing in 59.44. Her previous record of 59.58 was set in 2002.

Peirsol broke the World 100 backstroke record in a time of 52.98 seconds, bettering his previous record of 53.17 set at Indianapolis, Indiana in April 2005. The results:

Oleg Lisogor (UK) 27.53, 3. Alessandro Terrin (Ita) 27.55. 200m butterfly (semifinals): 1. Michael Phelps (US) 1:55.13, 2. Wu Peng (Chn) 1:55.17, 3. Ryuichi Shibata (Jpn) 1:55.96. 800m freestyle (semifinals): 1. Craig Stevens (Aus) 7:50.72, 2. Federico Colbertaldo (Ita) 7:50.77, 3. Oussama Mellouli (Tun) 7:51.48.

Women: 100m backstroke (final): 1. Natalie Coughlin (US) 59.44 (World record), 2. Laure Manaudou (Fra) 59.87, 3. Reiko Nakamura (Jpn) 1:00.40. 100m breaststroke (final): 1. Leisel Jones (Aus) 1:05.72, 2. Tara Kirk (US) 1:06.34, 3. Anna Khlistunova (Ukr) 1:07.27. — Agencies
