Gangjee in joint lead

Singapore : Kolkata pro Rahil Gangjee fired a sizzling opening round of six-under 66 for a share of the lead, while compatriot Digvijay Singh soared to tied third with a blemish-free 67 to brighten their chance of qualifying for the prestigous British Open.

Gangjee came up with a splendid show in the opening round of the 36 holes of International final qualifying-Asia at the Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore. He now goes into the second and final round in joint lead with Australia's Adam Groom.

Digvijay returned a a bogey-free card of 67 to share the third place with Australia's Lee Won-Joon and Sushi Ishigaki, the highest ranked Japanese player.

With the number of starters being 73, the qualifying berths were increased from four to five for Asia from the event.

Local favourite Mardan Mamat struck 71 in tied 12th place while India's Shiv Kapur was even-par for the day in joint 31st position.

Gaurav Ghei shot two-under 70 and was tied 12th. Arjun Singh (71) was tied 22nd, and Kapur (72) was tied 31st along with Vivek Bhandari (72). Amandeep Johl and Gurbaaz Mann, both 73, were tied 40th and Harmeet Kahlon (76) was tied 61st. — PTI
