THRISSUR: An elephant named Thechikottukavu Devidasan, killed its mahout, Kumaran, 29, of Parassery Iringeriparambil, at Kongode, in Palakkad at Thaikattussery on Tuesday. Trouble started when Devidasan attacked two other elephants that were being featured in the festival of the Durga Bhagavathy Temple in Thaikattussery around 5 a.m. The entire herd then ran amok. The elephants named Bastin Vinayshankar and Shaj Prasad were brought to control at Cherpu and Vallachira. Devidasan became more violent, gored Kumaran to death and destroyed an autorickshaw. Members of a family who were travelling in the autorickshaw had a narrow escape. People lit huge bonfires on the road to bring Devidasan under control. The animal became less violent around 3 p.m. and obeyed its mahout Kaimal. In another incident, an elephant named Chulliparambil Suryan, which was taken to the Anchangadi Alumthazhathu Temple, attacked its mahout at Vadanapally and ran amok on Tuesday. The animal was later brought under control.
