BIDAR: "The Animal Welfare Board of India does not support the killing of stray dogs. Their number should be controlled through carrying out contraceptive surgeries on them," member of the board Krishna Mittal told presspersons in Bidar on Tuesday. He said officials should ensure that roadside hotels and meat shops followed hygienic practices, and added that if the streets were kept clean, it would help control the stray dog menace. The board will set up five model goshalas in each State, with the aim of spreading the love for animals among people. "We will appoint youth to run these goshalas and train them in animal care. They will each be paid a stipend of Rs. 115 a day," Mr. Mittal said. He visited slaughterhouses in Kasab Galli on the Bidar-Hyderabad road, and urged officials of the City Municipal Council to ensure that such units maintained hygiene. He said there were 29 slaughterhouses for large animals, 18 for small animals and 13 poultry slaughterhouses in the district. He asked officials to take steps to ensure that only registered slaughterhouses were allowed to function. Mr. Mittal said the district had 12.87 lakh animals, including 2.6 lakh cattle, 1.97 lakh sheep and goats, 1.7 lakh buffaloes, 5.89 lakh chicken, 47,000 dogs, 21,000 pigs, and 3,000 other animals. Of these, 6,298 animals and chicken were being slaughtered every week. Deputy Commissioner Munish Moudgil and other officials were present.
