SHIMOGA: The Academic Council of Kuvempu University at its meeting held at Jnana Sahyadri, 27 km from here, on Tuesday gave its approval for the admission of students to postgraduate courses in the State through the Common Admission Test (CAT), as proposed by the Inter-University Board (IUB).

The decision to conduct a common entrance test for all postgraduate courses in the State was taken at the meeting of the IUB on February 23 under the chairmanship of Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy. This had followed the tabling of a report on the subject by a sub-committee headed by the Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University.

A two-member executive group comprising the Vice-Chancellors of Mysore University and Karnataka University had been asked to work out the modalities for introducing the CAT from the next academic year.

The Academic Council has decided that initially the test will be conducted only for the following 11 courses — MSc courses in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics and Microbiology, MA in History, Economics and Political Science, Masters in Social Work (MSW), MEd and MCom.

For these courses, 10 per cent of seats will be allotted for students from outside the State and the remaining 90 per cent of seats will go to students from the State.

This 90 per cent of seats will be pooled and made available to the executive committee for "centralised" counselling. The admission process would be conducted by the executive committee.
