SHIMOGA: Superintendent of Police Arun Chakravarthy said here on Tuesday that the police in the district are fully prepared to check the menace of matka and illicit liquor, likely to arise following the ban on arrack and lottery tickets. Addressing a press conference, he said the Police Department would not hesitate to invoke the provisions of the Goonda Act against those who engaged in sale of illicit liquor and encouraged matka biddings. He said he had worked out a strategy to check the menace and it would be implemented from July 1. He said his department was keeping close watch on the movements of suspicious persons and added that the situation could be tackled with existing personnel. Mr. Chakravarthy said a gang of seven, which attempted felling of sandal trees on the premises of the All India Radio Transmission Centre at Bhadravati, had been arrested. He said two mobile phones, two watches and five rounds of .303 rifles had been recovered from the them. Additional Superintendent of Police Siddharamappa was present.
