Stress on research, facilities in Kuvempu University budget

    SHIMOGA: The budget estimates of the Kuvempu University for 2007-2008 show a surplus of Rs. 4,45,655.

    The budget estimates which were presented at the Academic Committee meeting held at Jnana Sahyadri, about 27 km from here, on Tuesday by Registrar and Finance Officer Vasudev Nayak, put the receipts at Rs. 52,05,18,000 and the expenditure at Rs. 52,00,72,345 both under the plan and non-plan heads. They were adopted after a discussion on it.

    Vice-Chancellor B.S. Sherigara presided over the meeting.

    Mr. Nayak said the major estimated sources of receipts under plan head were: grants-in-aid from the State Government of Rs. 5.25 crore, UGC grants of Rs. 5.43 crore, Government of India grants of Rs. 10.3 lakh and other grants of Rs. 60 lakh. A greater emphasis had been laid on development during 2007-2008 for which Rs. 14.3 crore had been allocated. This was for construction of the new building for the Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College — one of the constituent colleges of the university, boys' and girls' hostels on the college premises in Shimoga, MBA Block on the varsity campus, second floor of the Evaluation Centre and first floor of the MBA Block at the P.G. Centre in Davangere.

    Academic activities

    He said a budgetary allocation of Rs. 2.51 crore had been made for academic activities. The other items of expenditure include: administrative expenditure of Rs. 4.76 crore, students' welfare Rs. 90.6 lakh, expenditure on distance education system Rs. 3.3 crore, examination expenditure Rs. 3.2 crore, salary component of the teaching and non-teaching staff Rs.18.45 crore and honorarium of guest lecturers Rs.1.93 crore.

    He said that apart from continuing the on-going projects, the budget envisaged new projects such as the Backward and Minorities Cell and Students' Accident Insurance Scheme.

    Mr. Nayak said it was proposed to computerise all works in the Finance Department from this year apart from linking all departments in the university through internet and e-mail. He said the new budget aimed at giving preference to research and academic programmes in addition to improving the infrastructure on the campus.

    He said the State Government had sanctioned Rs. 2.5 crore for construction of a separate building for the Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College and Rs. 2 crore for the development of a well-equipped stadium.

    PG centre at Kadur

    The Vice-Chancellor said a new postgraduate centre would start from functioning at Kadur in Chikmagalur district from the next academic year.

    The meeting mourned the death of Registrar Praveenchandra Pandey and Principal of the UBDT College at Davangere, Gurubasappa.
