Mixed land use areas will be targeted

  • All MCD Deputy Commissioners asked to make preparations
  • Delhi police have assured adequate security cover

NEW DELHI: After a gap of almost two months, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will again resume its sealing operations in the Capital on Wednesday following Supreme Court orders to target illegal shops and commercial establishments that are not given any relief under the recently notified Master Plan for Delhi-2021.

Though the Supreme Court has asked the civic body to seal all illegal commercial establishments falling in both notified and non-notified areas, the MCD has decided to resume the sealing operations on the roads falling under the mixed land use category.

The sealing will be carried out simultaneously in 11 of the 12 civic zones. Narela Zone will be the only area where no sealing would take place as of now as there are no roads notified for mixed land use. According to sources in the MCD, initially illegal shops and commercial establishments along nearly 600 roads recently notified by the Delhi Government and included in the mixed land use category will be targeted.

On roads notified for mixed land use, commercial activities, barring hazardous businesses, are allowed only from the ground floor shops.

However, the Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee had found that commercial activities on these roads were being illegally carried out from other floors also. All such shops will be sealed by the MCD squads. Gradually the MCD would bring more roads and areas under the purview of the sealing drive.

According to a Monitoring Committee member, directions on which roads are to be targeted would be given only in the morning. All MCD Deputy Commissioners have been asked to make all-out preparations for the sealing drive.

The Delhi police have also assured the MCD of adequate security cover for the sealing squads, while employees of the Delhi Jal Board and private power distribution companies would accompany the sealing squads to disconnect water and power connections to sealed premises, the Monitoring Committee member added.
