NEW DELHI: Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ram Babu Sharma has criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party for "indulging in baseless accusations and not playing the role of a constructive opposition". At a press conference, Mr. Sharma said the BJP was denouncing the five-year rule of the Congress in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, while it had not done anything worth mention during its term from 1997 to 2002. "We resorted to total computerisation of the MCD to provide every facility and information to the people online. With e-governance, the tender mafia was wiped out," Mr. Sharma said, adding that increased transparency has paved the way for rooting out corruption from the Corporation. Mr. Sharma, who is also a former Chairman of the MCD Standing Committee, said the Congress had also provided over nine lakh students of MCD-run schools with uniforms, books and mid-day meal on a regular basis. Also, he said, many schools have been provided permanent buildings to protect the students from extreme weather conditions. The Congress has also been instrumental in privatising the toll tax collection system through which the collections have increased from Rs. 40 crore per annum to over Rs. 70 crore, he said, adding that there has also been an annual saving of Rs. 15 crore in the collection of the toll tax. Mr. Sharma claimed that the party had also improved the cremation grounds by handing them over to social and religious organisations and providing funds for their beautification. Likewise, privatisation of garbage collection has been undertaken successfully in many zones. Finally, admitting that the people had been facing problems in getting building maps approved by inspectors of the MCD, the Congress leader said to overcome this problem his party has planned to grant permissions to people to get their maps certified and approved by authorised architects so that they can straightaway start construction of their building.
