Election making BJP raise Babri Masjid issue, says Congress

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI : The Congress has demanded that the Bharatiya Janata Party make it clear whether or not it would accept the verdict of the court/negotiated settlement on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid issue. Party spokesperson Satyavrat Chaturvedi said the BJP with raking up the issue keeping in mind the April-May Assembly elections.

Samajwadi Party

He pointed out that it had kept the issue aside when it was in power.

``Since the time of Rajiv Gandhi, the Congress has been consistent that the issue should be resolved either through a dialogue [between the two communities] or else accept the court verdict... and when the BJP was in power [in the Centre] it kept saying what the Congress and Rajiv Gandhi used to say,'' he said.

Mr. Chaturvedi said that surprisingly, the BJP had not found any major issue against the ruling Samajwadi Party. This meant ``something was cooking'' between the two parties.
