NEW DELHI: A forged production warrant was submitted at a Tis Hazari court here last month to secure the release of Atiq Ahmed, an alleged aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police in Mumbai this January. The warrant, purportedly issued by an Orai court in Uttar Pradesh, was submitted in the court of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at Tis Hazari by post and sought Atiq's appearance in connection with a case. The matter was to come up for hearing on February 27. But suspecting that something was amiss, the CMM crosschecked with the Orai court and found that no such warrant had been issued. Following this the CMM directed the police to investigate. the matter. Efforts are being made to identify those who conspired to secure Atiq's release on forged documents. Atiq, arrested at Meera Road in Mumbai, was a proclaimed offender in several criminal cases registered in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. The U.P. police had declared a reward of Rs. 2 lakh on his head. According to police, Atiq was introduced to Dawood in Mumbai by the Don's uncle Hazi Haider in 1981. He then returned to Kanpur the following year and continued to commit crimes. When Atiq and his younger brother Bale fell out with their elder brother Safiq, the latter stabbed Bale. In June 1984, Atiq attacked Safiq but the latter managed to escape. Safiq's close accomplice Sakir was killed in the gun battle, following which Atiq fled to the capital and remained underground for some time. He was arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police in 1994 and shifted to a Kanpur jail, from where he was released on bail. He was again arrested in a case under the Arms Act registered at the Timarpur police station here in 1999. Later, he came out on bail and again committed a series of crimes.
