GUNTUR: Telugu Desam Party supported candidate from Krishna-Guntur graduates' constituency Chigurupati Varaprasad won by a huge margin of 26,046 votes over his nearest rival G. Samaram at the end of the 39th round in the second preferential vote counting on Tuesday. He was declared elected at the end of 50 hours of counting. He polled 52,130 votes eliminating 39 candidates, while Dr. Samaram got 26,084 votes. The constituency had the highest number of voters registered (1,86,155) and 1,13, 204 exercised their franchise. Of these, only 1,04,206 votes were found valid. TDP supporters burst crackers outside the counting centre at A.L. B.Ed College at Lodge Centre in the city and took him in an open-top jeep to the district unit office in Arundelpet. Party president Prattipati Pulla Rao, City president Chukka Yesuratnam and others greeted him. Mr. Varaprasad was taken in a procession from Guntur to Vijayawada after receiving the Certificate of Election from Returning Officer G. Jayalakshmi.

"It was the cumulative result of my personal image, party policies, support from people in the social service sector that culminated into my victory," he told reporters. "Serving the youth and catering to their needs are my priorities," he said. "Unemployed graduates must be supported till they get a decent job for themselves," he opined.
