Pay water charges anywhere in city

CHENNAI : Chennai Metrowater consumers now have the option of paying their tax and charges in any part of the city as its 10 area offices and 60 depot offices have been networked recently with the head office.

The service was launched earlier this month, primarily to improve the collection of water tax and charges. The service, provided under Rs. 9 crore worth Information System and Technology Planning project, would cover about six lakh tax assessees in the city.

The pilot project launched three years ago connecting area office-V at Anna Nagar and its depot offices has been extended to other area offices now. The remaining 100 depot offices would be linked to the system soon, said a Metrowater official.

Besides facilitating better billing, the facility would provide online connectivity to all offices and also update consumers' account immediately.

At present, the information was updated through a rather tedious process of transferring details from area office and sending it to head office. The new system would increase the work efficiency. Consumers' complaints registered online would also be monitored and rectified through the system, he said.

Online payment of bills had been extended to several banks now. The board has already implemented several measures for bill payment such as installation of electronic data capturing machines at the area offices enabling credit card holders to pay bills through these machines or online. Consumers may also carry their transactions at Canara Bank branches authorised for bill collection and electronic delivery system counters installed in various areas, he said.
