TAMBARAM : Gold jewellery weighing 47 sovereigns was stolen from the house of a former village panchayat president in Madipakkam in the early hours of Tuesday. The burglar gained entry into the house at Karthikeyapuram by cutting open the window iron grilles. The occupants former president of Madipakkam village panchayat N. Thyagarajan, his wife Uma, their children Ramya and Lavanya, and his mother Ammani Ammal were fast asleep when the burglary happened. The burglary came to light when Ms. Ammani Ammal woke up around 3 a.m. and found the almirahs open. She woke up her son who found things from four almirahs scattered on the floor and jewels missing. He also noticed three iron grilles in one of the kitchen windows cut open. After he lodged a complaint with the Madipakkam police station at around 4 a.m., policemen came to the spot. Fingerprint experts picked up some clues from the scene of crime. Police suspect the culprit used a brand new instrument to saw off the iron grilles to ensure little noise. Mr. Thyagarajan said his family was residing there for the past four decades and the locality was relatively free of crime compared to other areas coming under the jurisdiction of the Madipakkam police station. As their house was adjacent to the Madipakkam-Velachery Link Road, there was round-the-clock movement of people. Police said the mode of operation by the culprit in the incident was rare and did not have anything to do with the methods adopted by the grille offenders.
