50 two-wheelers destroyed in fire

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI : At least 50 brand new two-wheelers were totally destroyed in a container lorry fire here on Monday night. Fire and Rescue Service personnel said the container lorry, transporting 100 two-wheelers from Hosur to Chennai, was involved in an accident near Sriperumbudur on Saturday, in which it had toppled over. However, it reached the city later and was parked in its depot near Tiruvottiyur Road. The driver spotted thick smoke emanating from the container, and opened the doors to find that many two-wheelers had caught fire.

Divisional Fire Officer Vijayakumar said that after they were informed soon after 7 p.m. on Monday, fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The fire was put out completely in an hour. The vehicles were packed and loaded two days ago and the accident could have led to the fire, it is suspected.
