CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has restrained the Tamil Nadu Government from appointing persons to the posts of nutritious meal centre organisers, cooks and cook assistants in the State. The Government, however, can go ahead with the selection process. The First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice D. Murugesan passed the interim order on a writ appeal preferred by the Tamil Nadu Arasu Sathunavu Paniyalar Sangam, on Tuesday. The matter relates to a recent notification issued by the Government seeking to fill 1,509 vacancies of nutritious meal centre organisers, 3,259 posts of cooks and 5,968 vacancies of cook assistants throughout the State. The matter was adjourned to April 12, after the Government Pleader sought time to get instructions. The petitioner-association said for over two decades these three categories of workers were in service without any promotional avenue or career advancement. While the organisers got Rs. 2,516 as monthly salary, it was Rs. 1,300 for cooks and Rs. 1,000 for cook assistants. The petitioner had urged the Government to consider promoting qualified persons working as cooks to the available posts of organisers, and assistant cooks to the vacancies of cooks. The remaining vacancies of any other categories could be filled through direct recruitment of fresh candidates, it contended.
