U.S. importers go by certification

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Quality certification has become a basic requirement for exports to the United States, according to Ravi Sundaram, an executive committee member of the Tamil Nadu branch of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce. "Quality certification is a way of life, not an add-on attribute... survival is based on quality," he told exporters at a seminar on Tuesday.

U.S. importers viewed Indian small and medium enterprises as unreliable ad-hoc suppliers unless they had certification, he said. Top certifying agencies such as Underwriting Laboratories, DNV and SGS made presentations on the services available.
