Coimbatore: Coastal security is being accorded enhanced focus and the Government has sanctioned 40 more check-posts and 12 marine police stations, Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) K.V.S. Murthy said here on Tuesday. He told reporters that the new check-posts would be in addition to the existing 60. The marine police stations would be provided with boats to patrol the shallow waters along the shore to prevent infiltration and smuggling. All these would be established and become functional within six months to one year. Superintendents of Police in coastal districts had formed special teams to maintain vigil. To a query, Mr. Murthy said the entire budgetary allocation would be equally distributed for various spheres of police modernisation such as communication, mobility, modern weapons, infrastructure for training, traffic management and the housing needs of police personnel. Police stations functioning from rented buildings would be moved to own premises. Buildings would be constructed for city police offices, district police offices and Armed Reserve facilities. All 100 outposts in the State would be upgraded as full-fledged police stations in phases. To strengthen the women police wing, the Government had earmarked 30 per cent reservation and adequate numbers of candidates were turning up during every recruitment drive.
