CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi himself participated in processing the tenders for the procurement of colour TV sets by the State Government and the entire process was being done in a transparent manner, said Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin here on Tuesday. The Government had set up an all-party committee, which met at regular intervals to take a decision on the purchase of TV sets. The distribution of TV sets was being done without any bias and in his Thousand Lights constituency, some of the beneficiaries belonged to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Participating in the second phase of free TV distribution here, Mr. Stalin said in the distribution of free TV sets, preference was being given to residents of `Samathuvapuram' and to the Scheduled Tribe colonies. In fact, free TV sets enabled ST colonies in the Nilgiris to get power connection, which the colony residents had been demanding for a long time. Mr. Karunanidhi, who distributed free TV sets to the beneficiaries, said his government had been fulfilling promises it had made in its election manifesto. The Government's Rs 2 a kg of rice, free LPG burners and gas connections, distribution of land to the landless agricultural workers, the marriage assistance scheme, the social security scheme for agricultural workers and other welfare schemes would continue, he said.
Investments high
Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran said after the DMK came to power big industrialists in the country were eager to start their units in Tamil Nadu. In February alone, investments to the tune of Rs. 4,000 crore had been received by the State. Chennai Corporation Mayor M. Subramaniam said 1,770 people would receive colour TV sets at the function. Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said the State was a pioneer in distributing free colour TV sets.
