IBM announces "Great Mind Challenge 2007"

Global computer technology major IBM on Tuesday launched "The Great Mind Challenge 2007" — a problem-solving contest for college students in which the programmers will pit their skills using the Corporation's open standards-based tools.

Kevin Faughnan, director, IBM Academic Initiative (worldwide), launched the competition in the city and gave away prizes to the winners of the previous edition of the competition.

He said there was a possibility of the solutions developed by the students in the competitions to be used by government agencies, industry bodies and academia.

"The contest also facilitates recruitment of participating students into relevant IT positions, as a web repository of all participants with their profiles are uploaded for use by IBM's business partners."

IBM's Mind Challenge last year saw widespread participation across 24 states in the country. More than 21,000 students from engineering and MCA streams from 700 colleges participated in the challenge, in which they developed applications on IBM technologies for real world project scenarios.

The Challenge is an outgrowth of IBM's Academic Initiative through which the global corporation has been allowing free access to its software and course materials.

Mr. Faughnan gave away the prizes to the toppers of the Challenge 2006. The team from Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Gwalior — comprising Anuj K.Goel, Kunal Garg and Mohit Garg — bagged the top prize.

The 2007 challenge, IBM representatives said, would help students get hands-on experience on their software products — WAS/WAS CE, DB2/ DB2 C, Websphere Portal and Forms, Tivoli and Rational and Linux-platform based Eclipse.
