Pension to parents of dead defence personnel?

Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Defence Ministry is actively considering a proposal for granting a share of pension benefits to dependent parents of deceased personnel.

This follows an order passed by the Guwahati Bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) in December 2006, which held that aged parents were entitled to get a portion of the family pension and the retirement benefits of a deceased government employee. Railway Engineer Kanon Borgohain (34) died in harness leaving behind his wife and aged parents.

The CAT passed the order on an application from the parents for grant of a portion of the pension of their deceased son.

It had asked the Government to consider amending the relevant rules.
