`Steps taken to prevent prisoners from using mobiles'

  • Passing-out parade of 253 warders held
  • Importance of prisoners' rights stressed

Hyderabad: Government is seriously considering installing jammers in prisons to prevent use of cellular phones. Necessary measures have already been taken to ensure that the prisoners do not get mobiles in jails, said Home Minister K. Jana Reddy.

He was speaking to presspersons after addressing the passing-out parade of stipendiary warders at the State Institute of Correctional Administration, Chanchalguda, here on Tuesday. Mr. Reddy expressed concern at the Maoists attacks on prisons and police stations.

The police were combating them effectively and doing its best to provide security. But it was also important that there was support from all quarters, including the press. Security would be stepped up wherever naxal activity was high. Earlier, addressing the 253 stipendiary warders who successfully completed the induction-training course, the Home Minister said they had a great responsibility to shoulder. They should try to reform prisoners and bring about attitudinal change in them.

When they leave the jail they should become useful citizens.

Director General of Police M.A. Basith congratulated the warders for a perfect parade display. S.K. Jayachandra, DG &IG Prisons, asked the warders to remember that they were dealing with human beings and that their rights were important.

The Home Minister later, gave away awards to Obleshu for securing best marks in subjects and also for being the best all-rounder. Nagaraju was given the best marksman award and Purshottam was awarded for best outdoor activity.

The overall parade commander award was presented to Shashi Bhushan.
