NEW DELHI: With the families of a girl and a 20-year-old man agreeing to allow them to enter wedlock when they attain the legal age of marriage, a Delhi court has decided not to hand out a harsh punishment to the man accused of kidnapping and raping the girl. In an order this past week, Additional Sessions Judge Bharat Parashar sentenced Mandeep Singh, a resident of East of Kailash, for the period he has already undergone incarceration following his arrest last December. The Judge also imposed a fine of Rs. 25,000 on the accused. Mandeep had allegedly eloped with the girl in November. A case of kidnapping and rape was registered on the complaint of the girl's mother. Mandeep was arrested at Mussoorie. The court observed that since the girl had testified in court that she had physical relations with Mandeep on her own will, the accused was not guilty of rape.
However, the court agreed that Mandeep had enticed the girl into leaving the house of her parents last November and hence he was guilty of kidnapping. In view of the
