dated March 29, 1957: Oscar awards

Ingrid Bergman scored her greatest personal triumph since she left Hollywood nearly eight years ago by winning an Oscar as the best film actress of 1956. The Swedish-born actress was acclaimed by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for her role in "Anastasia," the story of a Tsarist princess. It was her second Oscar. She won the first for her part in "Gaslight" a few years ago. Yul Brynner was named the best actor of the year for his part as the Siamese monarch who battles with a Victorian lady teacher in "The King and I." The Oscar for the best film went to "Around the World in 80 Days," the spectacular, 46-star picture inspired by Jules Verne's classic and made by Michael Todd. The Oscars were awarded at ceremonies held simultaneously in a New York theatre and a Hollywood cinema on March 27.
