High Security Zone

B. Muralidhar Reddy

BATTICALOA: Sri Lanka has declared portions of Sampur in Trincomalee district in the east, captured from the Tamil Tigers in September last year, as a High Security Zone.

A number of such displaced persons of Sampur, housed in refugee camps in the town, told The Hindu that they had been told that they cannot return to their homes due to security reasons. For some of the refugees, it has been the fourth or fifth displacement since September.

Sri Lanka ousted the LTTE from Sampur after the Tigers posed a threat to the Trincomalee harbour. Colombo has announced that New Delhi has agreed to build a 500 MW thermal power plant there.
