    Kakinada: A `table top exercise' programme was conducted on the disaster management and mitigate the suffering of the people in the event of cyclones and floods at a special meeting held here on Wednesday under the aegis of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The principal secretary disaster management Ms. Preeti Sudan along with Brigadier Khanna facilitator of the NDMA has explained the plan of action on flood control and disaster management, rescue and relief measures required. She said East Godavari district was identified as prone to natural calamities such as cyclones and considered a crucial centre for carrying on relief and rescue operations on a large scale in view of the several island villages and shore villages. She has conducted the exercise explaining the disaster struck and asking the officials of mitigation committee how they would respond to the situation. East Godavari Collector M. Subrahmanyam briefed the district administrations ever preparedness to meet any eventuality such as cyclones and floods including mobilising the men and material to carry out relief and rescue operations at shorter notices. He also said that food supplies would be ensured along with transport facility to move the people to safer areas and also the arrangements for providing relief camps along with the medical teams.

    Mitigation plan

    The Collector also explained the role that can be played by the country boats rather than the helicopters during flash floods.

    The SP Battina Srinivasulu and the additional SP Ranga Nath have the police plan of action including bandobust, relief and rescue besides quick disposal of the dead bodies.

    The project director DRDA Kumaraswamy, RDO Kadalaiah, DMHO Jayaram, the district supply officer and other officers explained their role under the disaster mitigation plan. Joint Collector Sudarsan reddy, DRO Mohan Raju, West Godavari Collector Lov Agarwal,, N.R. Babu Col General staff , Major Suraj subbu and Irrigation state engineer in chief M.K. Rehaman took part in the day long deliberations.
