Schools: Horatti leaves it to Cabinet

Bangalore: Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj S. Horatti has said that he is "personally firm" in his stand on the closure of 2,200 schools flouting the language policy and shall assert his views when the Cabinet sub-committee tables its recommendations in the next Cabinet meeting.

"But the Cabinet is supreme. I will have to abide by its decision," he added.

The Cabinet sub-committee has decided to recommend in favour of the schools that were derecognised for running classes in English-medium, while they had permission to impart education only in Kannada-medium.

The committee has recommended issuing fresh recognition to the schools with the condition that they will make new admissions to Standard I only for Kannada-medium and pay a fine to the department.

But children who are studying in English-medium will be allowed to continue in the same medium.

One-time chance

According to sources, even those not officially derecognised by the Government might get a one-time opportunity to get recognition with the same condition.

D.H. Shankaramurthy, Higher Education Minister and a member of the sub-committee, said that the final report was ready.

It was yet to decide on the quantum of fine to be paid by schools, he added.

Managements of derecognised schools were viewing this only as a "partial victory", the Minister said.
