Protective wall along Gedilam

Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE: A proposal has been sent to the State Government seeking Rs. 5 crore from the Rajiv Gandhi Natural Calamity (Tsunami) Rehabilitation Programme funds for the construction of a protective wall along the course of the Gedilam inside the town, according to Rajendra Ratnoo, District Collector.

Mr. Ratnoo inspected the road work in progress from Khammiampettai to the Jawans' Bhavan, running along the right bank of the river. He told reporters that the right bank at many places was lower than the maximum flood level, and hence it was highly vulnerable to flooding.

The recurring floods had been causing damage to life and property. Since Cuddalore happened to be at the confluence point, it used to bear the major brunt of the floods. Hence, it had been decided to lay an elevated bank that would serve as an alternative route to decongest the traffic in the town.

Mr. Ratnoo said so far Rs.45 lakh had been spent on dumping the gravel brought from the Karaikkadu Agraharam tank, about 12 km from here. Soon, the Highways Department would construct the road at an estimated cost of Rs 40 lakh. Once the work was completed, buses bound for Panruti, Salem, Puducherry and Chennai could be diverted through this route. Project Officer (DRDA) K. Megaraj, Municipal Commissioner R. Rajendran and Block Development Officer P.J. Revathi accompanied him.
