Congress: we'll do exceptionally well

Anita Joshua

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday refused to attach any significance to the pre-poll survey conducted by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies as per which the party was unlikely to improve on its 2002 showing.

Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan cited an internal study to assert that the party would do "exceptionally well."

Ms. Natarajan was unable to quantify "exceptionally well." She said the Mulayam Singh Government in Uttar Pradesh was on its way out. According to her, the ground was shifting and the party's internal report indicated large-scale disaffection and alienation from the Samajwadi Party among the people of the State.

The Congress has changed its candidates for four Assembly segments in Uttar Pradesh and announced its candidates for 44 other Assembly segments.
