Rule on lottery prizes struck down

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday held unconstitutional rule 9(1) of the Kerala Paper Lotteries (Regulation) Rules 2005, which guarantees payment of prizes offered on Government lotteries. Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan passed the judgment while dismissing a few writ petitions challenging the Government's decision to reduce the number of prizes offered for the Sport Super Bumper Lotteries. — Staff Reporter

CPI(M) member held

PATHANAMTHITTA: The police arrested S. Shahjahan, councillor of the Adoor municipality belonging to the CPI (M), for allegedly assaulting civic body chief Annmma Abraham of the Congress on Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 2.30 p.m. when the accused councillor had an altercation with the municipal chairperson over extending power connection to a colony.

Thiruvananthapuram: The All India Loco Running Staff Association held a demonstration before the Thiruvananthapuram Railway Divisional Office here on Wednesday to protest against what it described as the corrupt administration of the railways with the help of the recognised union, Southern Railway Mazdoor Union. — Staff Reporter

Hartal partial in Kollam

KOLLAM: The dawn-to-dusk hartal called on Wednesday by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kollam city limits was partial.

The hartal was called in protest against the arrest of nine Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) activists and slapping of non-bailable offence charges against them. Normal life remained unaffected.

Budget approved

THRISSUR: A meeting of the District Panchayat on Wednesday approved its budget for 2007-2008 that envisaged revenue of Rs.33.23 crore and expenditure of Rs.31.94 crore. Finance Standing Committee chairman Ambadi Venu, who presented the budget, said the productive sector had been given priority. — Staff Reporter

Oracle's body found

THRISSUR: The body of a `Velichapad' (oracle), Shine, 28, was found at the Karikkuzhi Pathinettumari Hanuman Temple in Kodungalloor on Wednesday. The police said that he was allegedly assaulted by a gang of people around 12.30 a.m. Panic spread through a large crowd that had gathered at the temple to attend a festival as the gang chased Shine and attacked him. — Staff Reporter
