KPCC to boycott EMS Ministry jubilee

Says it did nothing for the State's growth

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has decided to boycott the 50th jubilee celebrations of the EMS Namboodiripad Ministry.

Addressing a press conference here, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala said the EMS Ministry had failed to make any substantial contribution to the State's development and had gained notoriety for its "cell rule". Terming the EMS rule as a success was nothing but a futile attempt to twist historical facts, he said adding that the jubilee celebration was a move to lavishly spend public money from the exchequer. The KPCC also decided to observe May 18, the first anniversary of the LDF rule, as `Betrayal day.' The party will hold demonstrations and public meetings under the auspices of mandalam committees.

Mr. Chennithala said the Chief Minister himself did not attend the all-party meeting convened to discuss the modalities of the jubilee fete. The Congress had sent Thalekunnil Basheer to the meeting.

Education Minister M.A. Baby, who presided over the meeting, could not even present a draft proposal, he said. The State Government was going through a financial crisis and spending huge amounts on jubilee celebrations could not be justified. It was in this context that the party had decided to boycott the jubilee celebrations, he said.

Mr. Chennithala said the Government had failed to take any action to tackle communal violence. The LDF Government could not do anything as it came to power on the strength of the support from communal forces, he said. The KPCC office-bearers and DCC presidents meeting here passed a resolution condemning the Government's inaction in tackling communal violence.

The KPCC said the CPI(M) was making all-out efforts to put down political dissent. Terming this as a dangerous trend, Mr. Chennithala said the Assembly developments were deplorable and was an attempt to deny the Opposition its rights and privileges under parliamentary democracy.
