Delhi Govt. given time to decide on MCD schools

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday gave three months to the Delhi Government to take a policy decision on taking over more than 1,800 primary schools run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and thousands of their staff.

In an affidavit, the Government submitted before a Division Bench comprising Justice M. K. Sharma and Justice Sanjiv Khanna that in view of the coming into effect of the model code of conduct due to the MCD elections on April 5 and the enormity of the work, it needed sufficient time to take a decision. The Bench allowed the plea and gave the Government three months to take a decision and inform the Court.

The Government on March 21 informed the Court that it had in principle accepted its suggestion to take over all primary schools run by the local body. The Bench then had asked it to file an affidavit stating its decision to take over these schools. The Bench had earlier suggested to the Government to consider taking over all primary schools run by the civic body to improve the quality of education and the basic facilities.

The Bench has been hearing petitioners, including voluntary organisation Social Jurist, seeking improvement in the quality of education in the MCD-run and Delhi Government schools.
