Metrowater revenue up by Rs.16.18 crore

Water supply resumption through pipeline major factor

CHENNAI : Chennai Metrowater registered an increase of about Rs.16.18 crore in its revenue through sale of water during 2005-06.

According to an annual report of the board for 2005-06, placed in the Assembly on Wednesday, the total revenue through water sale last year was about Rs.205.33 crore against Rs.189.15 crore earned in 2004-05.

However, the water agency registered a net deficit of Rs.12.54 crore, which is the difference between the total income and the total revenue expenditure last year. The water sale through metered domestic connections has also experienced a slight increase of about Rs. 2 crore last year. The annual report attributed the resumption of water supply through pipeline as the reason for revenue increase through water sale. The addition of new metered water connections was only negligible, a Metrowater official said.

At present, the water agency serves around 894 domestic metered connections and 11,086 connections of commercial establishments. The total metered water connections of 12,797 also included institutions and local bodies. Metrowater catered to around 4.21 lakh unmetered domestic water connections (charged on flat rate). Every year, about 20,000 new unmetered connections were added, he said.

The increase in the pipeline supply also saw the revenue through mobile water supply to private customers drop by Rs.12.31 crore to Rs.17.88 crore in 2005-06. But Metrowater earned an additional Rs.7.30 crore, compared to 2004-05, through the water and sewerage taxes. The annual report also said that the 530-million-litre-a-day Chembarambakkam water treatment plant would be completed by May. The project commenced five years ago. A Metrowater official said there was a delay in carrying out the project owing to problems in land acquisition. At present, about 90 per cent of the work had been completed.
