10-day jail for Marathi editor recommended

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: The privilege committee of the Maharashtra Legislature has recommended a 10-day imprisonment for the editor of a Marathi weekly for publishing a `derogatory' article against Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar.

The committee, headed by MLA Chandrakant Chhajed, tabled its report in the Assembly on Wednesday finding that Madhukar Londhe, editor of Sasemira published from Kolhapur, carried an article against Mr. Kupekar in the issue of November 1, 2005 "without ascertaining facts."

The article severely criticised Mr. Kupekar, stating that the Speaker staged a walkout from the House to express his displeasure against the Government on the issue of providing security to MLA, Arun Gawli. The weekly had said that the Speaker would be replaced.

Actually, Mr. Kupekar had left the House after adjourning it following a din. The report said the Speaker had been insulted.
