Permanent excise policy sought
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD:
The Andhra Pradesh Toddy Tapping Workers' Association has demanded a permanent excise policy instead of extending the old one once in three months.
In a representation to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy here on Wednesday, B. Dharmabiksham, former MP and president of the organisation, sought a comprehensive Act providing for work/livelihood guarantee to tappers.
It pleaded for reopening of closed toddy shops across the State, continuation of ex gratia scheme along with insurance facility, old-age pension, housing, education, medicare and implementation of GO allotting five acres to each tapper's family.
Meanwhile, members of the Anhdra Pradesh `Kallugeeta Karmika Sangham' staged a dharna before the Excise Commissioner's office here to press several demands, including changes in G.O. 767, scrapping of G.O. 555, and announcement of new excise policy to ensure protection to toddy-tapping profession.
