BANGALORE: Women members of the Legislative Council put the Government on the back foot by asking why it had not appointed even one woman Minister. Participating in the debate on the Budget, Motamma (Congress) said the tardy implementation of the Bhagya Lakshmi scheme showed that the coalition Government had no concern for women. Otherwise, it would have appointed at least one woman Minister. Stung by the comment, Leader of the House D.H. Shankaramurthy said the Bharatiya Janata Party would appoint women Ministers when its turn to head the Government came. Contrary to the views being expressed by some, Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa would be the next Chief Minister, he asserted. Even as he was speaking, Vimala Gowda of the BJP retorted that the question was not whether the Government would appoint women as Ministers after the change of guard. "Why has the Government not appointed a woman Minister despite there being eligible candidates in the Assembly and the Council. Can the Government give reasons," she asked.
